Pierce College Students Organize Harvest Fest

Pierce College students have stepped in to stage a do-it-yourself fall festival to replace an annual autumn event canceled last month by the school’s agriculture department.
The college’s Associated Students Organization will hold a seven-hour “Harvest Celebration” on Saturday, said LeAnna McGuire, a spokeswoman for the group.
The event replaces the agriculture department’s two-day Harvest Festival, which was canceled because of the threat of rain on Oct. 24-25.
College officials said students organized their own event to preserve the 15-year tradition of the farm-oriented festival, which had featured milk-drinking and egg-tossing contests.
Saturday’s activities will include demonstrations of wool-spinning, blacksmithing and weaving. There will also be a petting zoo, pony rides, hay rides and displays by various campus clubs.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Campus Center rather than at the college farm, where past festivals were staged, officials said.
