Local News in Brief : Railroad Track Relocation

Share

The Los Angeles County Transportation Commission has approved the relocation of railroad tracks in Compton to make way for the Long Beach-Los Angeles light-rail line.

The $67-million project will reroute the Southern Pacific railroad tracks two blocks east, from Willowbrook Avenue to Alamitos Street, under the agreement approved Wednesday. The project boosts the total cost of the 21.5-mile light-rail line to $762 million, a commission spokeswoman said.

The Compton City Council, which approved the agreement in September, sought the railroad track relocation to alleviate noise and traffic congestion caused by freight trains that rattle through the city. The Southern Pacific Transportation Co. “has agreed in principle” to the relocation, but a formal agreement is still being negotiated, said company spokesman Andy Anderson.
