Nin Was Married to Guiler

Share

The review of “A Literate Passion: Letters of Anais Nin and Henry Miller (The Book Review, Nov. 8) incorrectly refers to Anais’ first husband as “Hugh Nin, a banker. . . .” Nin was her maiden name; he was Hugh Guiler. Their mutual respect for their tender young love and marriage extended far beyond their actual relationship. Her reluctance to reveal this part of her life to her admirers left a bewildering gap in her diaries until the publication of that period of 1923-’27, which was released in 1983. This quality of respect for privacy may be little understood in this age of “exposure” as a genre for many disenchanted with relationships and eager to exploit that fact.

An error in editing led to the identification of Anais Nin’s husband Hugh Guiler as Hugh Nin in Noel Young’s review.
