Motorist Killed, 3 Hurt in Crash

A Hemet woman was killed, and three other people were seriously injured after their van was rear-ended Saturday night in Escondido, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Francisco Alvarez, 23, of Loma Linda, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, felony drunk driving, and hit-and-run, a CHP spokeswoman said.

The accident occurred at 6 p.m. when a vehicle traveling south at a high rate of speed on Interstate 15 struck the victims’ van.

The impact knocked the van off the freeway and flipped it onto Centre City Parkway below, the CHP said.

Agnes Brumwin, 65, of Hemet, was in critical condition at Sharp Memorial Hospital. Two survivors were taken to Palomar Hospital. No other identifications were available.

Alvarez was not hurt and tried to flee the scene on foot. He was arrested and taken to County Jail in Vista, the CHP said, adding that bail was set at $10,000.
