NHL Roundup : Rare Shutout by Keans Gives Bruins 1-0 Victory

Doug Keans made 28 saves Sunday night at Detroit, including one on a penalty shot by Steve Yzerman, to lead the sizzling Boston Bruins to a 1-0 victory.

Billy O’Dwyer’s first goal of the season late in the second period and Keans’ remarkable work in the nets enabled the Bruins to stretch their winning streak to seven games.

There were a couple of anxious moments before Keans posted his first shutout in nearly three years.

The first came at 6:41 of the second period, after Yzerman, the Red Wings’ leading scorer was pulled down from behind on a breakaway. On the penalty shot Yzerman skated to within 15 feet of Keans and let go a wrist shot the Bruin goalie stopped with his pad as he slid across the goal.

Then, halfway through the final period, Detroit had a two-man advantage for 52 seconds and couldn’t score.

“I let Mike Eagles (Quebec) back me into the net and score the other night,” Keans said. “I decided to come out and challenge Steve.”

Keans just barely outplayed Glen Hanlon of the Wings. Hanlon, who shut out Washington last Tuesday, had a string of 109 scoreless minutes ended when O’Dwyer got a long rebound and fired it into the net.

The Red Wings have scored just two goals in their last three games. In addition to the two-man advantage, they had six other power-play opportunities.

Winnipeg 4, Edmonton 3--Dale Hawerchuk deflected a shot from the point by Dave Ellett into the net at 3:26 of overtime at Winnipeg to climax an amazing rally.

The Jets trailed, 3-0, going into the last period. They rallied for three goals, the tying one by Hawerchuk with almost four minutes remaining in regulation.

Wayne Gretzky scored twice for the Oilers before the middle of the first period.

The victory ended the Jets’ winless string at four games.

Chicago 3, Vancouver 2--Rick Vaive scored on a 17-foot shot with less than two minutes remaining at Chicago to give the Blackhawks the victory.

Vaive’s 17th goal of the season whistled past Canucks’ goalie Kirk McLean, who was screened by one of his defenseman.

The victory gave the Blackhawks an 8-1-1 record on home ice and gave them undisputed possession of first place in the Norris Division.
