Rep. Mel Levine (D-Santa Monica) introduced legislation to require manufacturers of toy firearms to distinctively mark them as toys. The International Assn. of Chiefs of Police and the U.S. Public Interest Research Group voiced support for the bill but urged a ban on all toy guns. The police group also asked for hearings on the issue. At a Washington news conference, Levine said several children have been shot at or killed by law officers mistaking the toys for real guns.
