Santa Monica : Electronic Voting to be Studied

Share

To the chagrin of some members, the City Council will look into setting up an electronic voting system for its meetings.

Councilman Herb Katz made the proposal on Tuesday, saying that replacing the current voice-vote system with electronically registered voting would “stop some of the game-playing and get some straight voting.”

Mayor James Conn and Councilman Dennis Zane agreed to have the proposal studied, but said they opposed the idea.

“I like the voice-vote ritual and prefer it,” Conn said.

The city staff was instructed to report on the costs of an electronic voting system as well as improvements in the sound system and tape recorders and modifications for the hearing impaired.
