A California Highway Patrol officer was killed when he was run over by a motorist in Riverside County. Officer Mark Taylor, 28, had stopped a woman driving along Interstate 10 near Cathedral City to issue a citation when an elderly motorist hit the rear of the woman’s car and struck the officer, throwing him into the air, Officer Tom Granger said. Muriel Chumley, 79, then hit Taylor again, dragging him a few hundred feet, Granger said. Taylor died a short time later at Desert Hospital. Chumley was under observation at the hospital. Sheila Sherman, 25, of Thousand Oaks, the driver of the car Chumley hit, was reported in serious condition.
