Break in Gas Pipeline Prompts Evacuations

MIDKIFF, Tex. —
A farmer’s plow punctured an underground pipeline, releasing a toxic cloud of natural gas and hydrogen sulfide that forced two evacuations of the surrounding area, officials said.
About 10 families who fled after the Phillips Petroleum line was cut were allowed to return about midnight Friday. A second evacuation of about 100 people took place when pressure was restored to the broken line by mistake. No injuries were reported, and the residents returned later Saturday after the fumes dissipated, authorities said.
