Local News in Brief : Orange : Police Arrest Suspect in Shooting of Marine
A 36-year-old Mission Viejo man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the shooting of a Marine corporal outside a mini-mall early Monday, authorities said.
Police officers responding to a report of gunfire at 3:24 a.m., found Lance Cpl. Jeffrey Willis lying in the mall’s parking lot at Chapman Avenue and Hamlin Street, Police Sgt. Timm Browne said.
Willis was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he was listed in serious but stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. Willis is stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station in Tustin, officials said.
Browne said the shooting occurred after an argument between the 27-year-old corporal and William Charles Jackson, 36, of Mission Viejo.
Jackson was found at a home on South Hamlin Street home and was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, Browne said. But he declined to discuss what prompted investigators to suspect Jackson or what detectives believe to have been the motive for the shooting.
Browne said Jackson was being held at County Jail.
