The State : Pope’s Visit Nets a Deficit

Share

A spokesman for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Monterey said a loan from Wells Fargo Bank was needed to offset a $1-million deficit stemming from Pope John Paul II’s Sept. 17 visit. Diocese spokesman Ted Elisee said the bank had already extended a $1-million line of credit, and that the diocese will continue to ask members for donations and sell papal souvenirs to raise money. The diocese has mailed donation requests to all 72,000 people who attended the papal Mass at Laguna Seca, and continues to sell commemorative videotapes and photo albums.
