APARTMENTS FOR THE DISABLED IN ORANGE COUNTY
To be considered as accessible to the disabled, apartment units must be on ground level and have easy access to the parking lot. Width of the door frames within each unit should be a minimum of 32 inches to accommodate the average wheelchair, which is 27 inches wide.
Kitchen, bathroom and bedroom areas should have adequate turning space for wheelchairs. Specific dimensions of each room have not been officially set; a unit’s potential for wheelchair maneuverability is left to the landlord’s judgment.
Orange County houses two subsidized apartment complexes whose units are fully equipped for the disabled. These are Carbon Creek Shores in Anaheim, and Casas del Rio in Orange. For information call Carbon Creek at (714) 630-3100 and Casas del Rio at (714) 633-2510.
Renter’s subsidies are available through the Orange County Housing Authority for qualified applicants, but there is a long waiting period. Santa Ana, Garden Grove and Anaheim each have their own housing authorities. All other Orange County cities fall under the jurisdiction of OCHA. Also, the U.S. Department of Housing and Community Development provides grants of up to $1,500 per unit to landlords in specified areas of the county who are willing to modify their apartment units.
