Local News in Brief : Heavy Southland Surf
A strong storm in the Gulf of Alaska whipped up heavy surf along west-facing Southern California beaches Wednesday, with breakers reaching 10 feet along exposed sites, the National Weather Service said.
Swells from the heavy storm will continue along the Los Angeles County beach areas through today, the weather service said. West-facing beaches can expect 6-foot breakers, with occasional sets of 8 to 10 feet at some well exposed locations.
It is extremely dangerous to fish or observe waves from exposed coastal structures or rocks during heavy surf conditions, as large waves can suddenly sweep across previously dry areas, the weather service cautioned. Swimming in these waves may be dangerous for anyone.
The weather service said there is little chance of any major damage at the present time. A high tide of 6.5 feet was expected this morning at 6.
