Local News in Brief : Garden Grove : Little Saigon Substation Gets Answering Service
In an effort to help Vietnamese-speaking crime victims, police this week installed a telephone answering service at its Little Saigon substation to take reports of illegal activities.
The answering machine at the substation, in the Bolsa Mini Mall, greets callers in both Vietnamese and English when Vietnamese-speaking community service officers are not available to take the information themselves, police said.
Crime reports can be made anonymously.
The number is (714) 775-2762. Crime reports can also be made by writing to the Police Department, Bolsa Mini Mall Office, P.O. Box 1381, Garden Grove 92642.
Police Lt. Scott Hamilton said reports of such crimes as robbery, burglary, extortion or fraud can be made 24 hours a day, although situations demanding immediate medical treatment should still be reported by calling the 911 emergency number.
Police borrowed the idea from San Jose, where there also is a sizeable Indochinese refugee community, Hamilton said.
