19th Game of Chess Match Adjourned

The 19th game of the world chess championship in Seville, Spain, was adjourned Wednesday, with challenger Anatoly Karpov in an advantageous position. But it seemed doubtful that Karpov could defeat champion Gary Kasparov when the game is resumed today.

Wednesday’s play followed the course of several games from the first Karpov-Kasparov match in 1984, although Karpov’s 14th move was new and seemed to secure an edge. Kasparov reacted by sacrificing a pawn to reach a solid defensive formation.

The match remains tied, 9-9. Karpov needs 12 1/2 points to win. If the 24-game series ends in a 12-12 tie, Kasparov will keep his title.
