CAMPAIGN ’88 : Paper Backs Du Pont

From Associated Press

Republican presidential hopeful Pierre S. (Pete) du Pont IV has won the coveted endorsement of the Union Leader, New Hampshire’s only statewide daily newspaper and long a force in GOP state politics.

“It is no secret that this newspaper has not been a flag-waving enthusiast for any of the candidates running for President,” Publisher Nackey Loeb said in a front-page editorial this week. “A lot of the conservatives are in the same boat,” she said.

“But the reality is that there are many things that need doing in this country. . . . Someone must do the job. Of all those running, this newspaper believes that the best man for that job is Pete du Pont.”

The former Delaware governor and other presidential hopefuls have courted the conservative newspaper, but Loeb and former Gov. Meldrim Thomson, who writes a Union Leader column, had urged Jeane J. Kirkpatrick, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, to enter the race. Kirkpatrick declined.
