Local News in Brief : Sewer Plan Challenged
A City Hall plan to curtail new construction in Los Angeles to prevent sewer overflows is inadequate, according to state Assemblyman Tom Hayden (D-Santa Monica).
Hayden charged Wednesday that the plan announced by Mayor Tom Bradley last month is based on miscalculations of sewage flow. The mayor’s plan to limit new hookups will not accomplish the goal of reducing flow through city sewers, Hayden said.
However, Bradley’s office reiterated that the sewer system will be protected from overflows if growth adds no more than seven million gallons a day of new waste for the next few years.
Under Bradley’s plan, if the system is threatened with new overflows, limits on construction would be ordered.
