40 From County to Join Protest in Washington
More than 40 members of the Orange County Jewish community, including three rabbis and four teen-agers, are leaving today for Washington for a pre-summit rally for Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union.
“The idea is to demonstrate in support of freedom for Soviet Jews and to do it right on the day before the summit starts,” said Merv Lemmerman, executive director of the Jewish Federation of Orange County.
When the demonstrators gather on the Ellipse Sunday, Lemmerman said, Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev will already be in the city for his meetings with President Reagan. “The timing is so that (Gorbachev) will be aware of our concern,” he said.
Scheduled speakers at the “Mobilization for the Summit,” sponsored by the National Conference on Soviet Jewry, include prominent Soviet exiles Natan Sharansky, Vladimir Slepak and Ida Nudel.
The three rabbis joining the group are Allen Krause, of Temple Beth El in Laguna Niguel; Bernard P. King, of Shir Ha-Ma’alot Harbor Reform in Newport Beach, and Henri E. Front, of Temple Beth David, Westminster, former chairman of the Orange County Human Relations Commission. The four teen-agers are members of the B’nai B’rith Youth Organizations.
The leaders of the delegation are Jeff Schulein, Newport Beach, president of Jewish Federation of Orange County; William Shane, of Huntington Beach; and Dr. Mike Lapin, chairman of the Orange County chapter of the American Jewish Committee.
