Students at two South Bay high schools who collected cans and bottles last month collected money Thursday as winners in a recycling contest.

Students at Westchester and Gardena high schools placed first and third, respectively, for collecting aluminum and plastic containers in a citywide contest sponsored by the RecyCAL Co. of Sherman Oaks.

Westchester received a $1,000 award for collecting nearly 5,000 containers. The money will be used to defer the costs of senior activities, including the prom, said Principal Jim Davis. Gardena principal Tamotsu Ikeda said his students will use part of their $500 award for a senior citizens’ luncheon and the remainder for student activities.

RecyCAL is a nonprofit group that promotes recycling and litter reduction, said spokeswoman Lynn Homsy. The contest was aimed at raising student awareness of the California Beverage Container Recycling and Litter Control Act, which went into effect Oct. 1, she said.
