Gary Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov agreed on Thursday to draw their 19th game of the world chess championship after 62 moves, leaving the score tied at 9 1/2 points apiece in the series.

Kasparov retains the advantage in the 24-game series. In the event of a 12-12 tie, he will retain his championship.

“Kasparov’s policy may not be very enchanting for spectators, but I think he will try to draw all the remaining games,” said grandmaster Victor Korchnoi of Switzerland.

The 20th game is scheduled for today with Kasparov playing white.

Play had been adjourned Wednesday night with Karpov, playing white, a pawn ahead in an endgame.

Karpov, 36, held the championship crown for 10 years before losing to Kasparov, 24, in 1985.

The winner of the match requires 12 1/2 points or six victories. A win scores one point and a draw a half. Each player has achieved three wins with 13 games drawn.
