The 1986 infant death rate in California was the lowest ever recorded, state health officials said Friday.

The rate was 8.9 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, said state Health Services Director Kenneth Kizer.

The 1985 rate was 9.5; the previous low was 9.4 in 1984.

The rate in 1960 was 23.3 deaths per 1,000 live births for a decrease of 61.8%, said Kizer.
