Returning to the scene of the crime...

Returning to the scene of the crime was a particularly poor idea for a bandit who botched his getaway and then tried to mingle with his victims to escape notice. A gunman wearing a nylon stocking over his head had robbed patrons at a bar in New Athens, Ill., and fled when he realized he had lost his keys, said St. Clair County Sheriff’s Lt. Otto Jakob. Fearing he would be found by police, the bandit stripped to his briefs and went back into the bar saying that he, too, had been robbed, Jakob said. But one of the bar workers became suspicious and told police who arrived at the White Pines Lounge that the man’s voice sounded like the robber’s. Police arrested the nearly nude man, identified as Thomas L. Winfrey, 26, of Hillsboro, Mo., and charged him with five counts of armed robbery.
