The World : Gunmen Slay Colombian Drug Lord

Share

Gunmen shot and killed Rafael Cardona Salazar, a high-ranking member of a Colombian cartel that furnishes as much as 80% of the cocaine shipped to the United States, police said. Cardona Salazar, 35, had been the subject of an extradition request by the U.S. Justice Department, but the warrant for his arrest was voided when the Colombian Supreme Court suspended the 1979 extradition treaty between Colombia and the United States. Police said Cardona Salazar and his secretary were shot to death Friday at the automobile dealership he operated in a suburb of Medellin, a provincial capital in northwestern Colombia that is the center of the so-called Medellin cartel. Police said the killing may be related to rivalries between the city’s drug gangs.
