Rock guitar virtuoso Eddie Van Halen was fined $644 and ordered to fund a $3,500 Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) scholarship after he pleaded no contest to drunken driving Friday in Los Angeles Municipal Court. Van Halen, 32, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol Sept. 8. He was placed on 36 months probation and ordered to fund the MADD scholarship for a year. Van Halen will fund the Seth Bloomberg Memorial Citizenship Award, part of a MADD program that rewards high school seniors for their participation in the struggle to eliminate drunken driving. Bloomberg was killed in a traffic accident with a drunken driver in 1980 while returning from a Van Halen concert. Van Halen also was ordered to begin a 90-day alcohol-treatment program.
