Local News in Brief : Garden Grove : Handicapped, Elderly Transit Needs Stressed

Share

The unmet transit needs of the handicapped and the elderly are so great that the proposed expansion of the county’s dial-a-ride program would be used up instantly, Orange County Transit District board members were told Monday.

“I would strongly recommend additional service,” said Greg Winterbottom, vice chairman of the Consolidated Transportation Services Agency (CTSA), which, unlike dial-a-ride, provides door-to-door, reservation-based transit only to the elderly and the handicapped.

OCTD board members, who have been studying proposed expansion of dial-a-ride service, have been concerned about possibly duplicating some of the service offered by CTSA.

But several people, including Orange County Transportation Commission Executive Director Stan Oftelie, testified Monday that there is little or no “overlap” between CTSA and dial-a-ride, in part, because the need far outstrips the resources of both programs.
