Local News in Brief : Irvine : Special Ramps to Aid Employees of Spectrum

Share

By late 1989, workers commuting to the Irvine Spectrum business complex will have special car-pool ramps available at the Barranca Parkway overpass of the Santa Ana Freeway, according to plans approved Monday by the Orange County Transit District.

OCTD board members voted unanimously to set aside about $2.5 million to pay for part of the reserved ramps, which will be built along with car-pool lanes planned for the $1-billion widening of the Santa Ana Freeway.

The Irvine Co., developer of the high-employment Spectrum complex, will design the project and reserve additional right of way for the ramps to be built by Caltrans. The city of Irvine has agreed to build the rest of the overpass.

OCTD officials said the agreement is “unique” because of the number of agencies involved. But they added that it’s an example of the close cooperation needed on local and regional transportation projects.
