Eleven security officers have been suspended at the San Onofre nuclear power plant pending an investigation into allegations that four of them played cards with the knowledge of their supervisor while on duty, plant officials announced Tuesday.

David Baron, a spokesman for plant operator Southern California Edison, said the security officers were suspended either because of their involvement in the alleged games or their failure to report the activity.

If confirmed, the games would be inconsistent with the responsibilities of security officers while on duty and would result in further disciplinary action, Baron said.

But the reported activities would not have affected the security or safety of the plant, he said. Security personnel suspected of participating in the games are assigned to monitor the status of automatic electronic security systems that are regularly reviewed by other plant personnel.

The investigation was the result of an anonymous tip by an employee. Baron said plant officials have informed the Nuclear Regulatory Commission of the internal probe.
