Local News in Brief : Rent Control Defeated

Share

After several years of debate over rent control for mobile homes, Paramount voters on Tuesday defeated a rent control law by a vote of 966 to 735.

City officials and other proponents maintained that the measure, which would have yearly rent increases matching the rise in the federal consumer price index, would apply exclusively to 19 mobile home parks in the city. But opponents said they feared the law could eventually lead to citywide controls on all rentals.

Mobile home park residents, many of them elderly, had been coming to City Council meetings for years seeking help in combatting rent increases.
