A Superior Court jury Wednesday convicted an Anaheim man of involuntary manslaughter in the death of a man stabbed 23 times in an Anaheim street fight.

Daniel Mendoza was convicted of killing Rogelio Mendez, 40, on the night of Aug. 30, 1986. According to witnesses, Mendoza and another man fought with Mendez in the 500 block of North East Street, stabbed him repeatedly and then chased him for a block and stabbed him again.

Mendez died at UCI Medical Center in Orange.

The jury found a second defendant, Mauricio Resendez, not guilty on all murder charges and deadlocked on whether to convict him of a lesser crime.

Resendez, who had been jailed since the stabbing along with Mendoza, was ordered released on his own recognizance. The court scheduled Jan. 29 for a hearing on whether Resendez can still be tried on a lesser charge.

Mendoza was ordered to appear Jan. 8 for sentencing. He could receive up to eight years in state prison.
