Local News in Brief : City Pay Increase Urged

Los Angeles City Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky proposed Wednesday that about 500 city employees receive raises to at least $5.01 an hour, an amount backers call a “moral minimum wage.”

Yaroslavsky, joined by representatives of various community groups, told reporters before introducing the proposal in the council that the current $3.35-an-hour minimum wage is inadequate.

Yaroslavsky said that the boost would apply mainly to workers who set up and dismantle exhibits at the Los Angeles Convention Center and locker room attendants at city recreation facilities.

The increase would cost the city about $185,000 a year, he said.
