The State : Agnos Vows to Be Different

Assemblyman Art Agnos, a former social worker whose Populist mayoral campaign overcame long odds, vowed to be an unorthodox mayor after his resounding victory over a San Francisco City Hall insider. The 49-year-old Democratic state legislator and self-described liberal climaxed a savvy eight-month campaign by defeating John Molinari, president of the Board of Supervisors, with 70% percent of the vote. Molinari, 52, who called himself a centrist, was endorsed by outgoing Mayor Dianne Feinstein and other influential politicians. “You’re going to see me doing things that are unorthodox,” Agnos said in the first interview spelling out specific plans for his administration, beginning Jan. 8. He cited planned visits to police precincts to chat with officers as well as rolling up his sleeves for brown-bag lunches with city department heads.
