Judge Wary of Gang Restrictions

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge today expressed serious reservations about the Los Angeles city attorney’s proposal to ban members of a Westside street gang from gathering together in public places and to limit visits to their homes.

At a hearing on a proposed preliminary injunction against the 200-plus-member Playboy Gangster Crips, Judge Warren H. Deering said City Atty. James K. Hahn’s proposals “are far, far overreaching” on constitutional grounds. But Deering said he will take the injunction request against the gang, which is accused of peddling drugs in the Cadillac-Corning neighborhood, under submission before making a final order in the case.
