Chiefs Look for Something to Throw at Bo

Contrary to popular belief, it was not the curveball that caused Bo Jackson’s 158 strikeouts last baseball season.

It was the high inside fastball that tied the 1985 Heisman Trophy winner in knots and caused him to be benched during most of the second half of his first full baseball season with the Kansas City Royals.

“I wish we had an inside fastball to throw him Sunday,” joked Coach Frank Gansz, whose Kansas City Chiefs will play Jackson and the Raiders Sunday.

Still, Gansz may be the only coach in the NFL who is glad his team didn’t draft Jackson.

“You’d love to have Bo on your roster, don’t get me wrong,” he said. “But I don’t think it would have been good for the Chiefs to draft him. I really don’t. We root for the Royals, too, you know.

“I don’t think Kansas City would have been the right team to draft him for football because of his commitment to baseball right across the parking lot. There would have been some real animosity.”

“Even knowing what I know now (the Chiefs have a 2-10 record), I would have still had reservations about his ability to come in and play football as proficiently as he’s played. I give him all the credit in the world.”
