Santa Monica : Pier Restoration Plan Deferred
In its last meeting of the year, the City Council referred a long-awaited development plan for the Santa Monica Pier back to its authors to give time for a public hearing and a study session.
The Pier Restoration Corp., after five years of planning, presented a project that calls for 150,000 square feet of commercial development on the pier with a tenant mix including amusements, restaurants and retail businesses.
The city would spend about $7 million on the project’s first phase, which includes repairing the pier platform and upgrading public utilities. Private investment of $13.6 million would be sought.
Council members decided the public should be given more time to study the plan before it is voted on.
The pier, one of Santa Monica’s most important landmarks, was heavily damaged in storms in 1983 and has been losing money for years.
