Sifford Is Awarded $100,000 for Making Hole-in-One in 1986 Senior Tournament
Pro golfer Charlie Sifford was awarded $100,000 by a federal jury Thursday as compensation for a hole-in-one he made at a golf tournament more than 20 months ago, his attorney said.
The verdict came after 3 1/2 hours of deliberation and was unanimous, according to Jerry Roisman of Hartford, Conn., Sifford’s attorney, who said the trial before Judge John G. Davies lasted three days.
Roisman said it had been advertised that the first player to make a hole-in-one on the 168-yard, par-3 15th hole in the 1986 Johnny Mathis Senior golf tournament at Mountaingate Country Club would receive $100,000 and a new car.
Sifford made the hole-in-one on March 28, Roisman said, but didn’t receive the money or the car. Roisman said that signs advertising the prizes were torn down before Sifford got to the 15th hole.
Defendants in the lawsuit were B.P.J. Enterprises, promoter of the tournament, and Freemont Indemnity Co., one of its sponsors.
