News In Brief : Vote Against Fire Service Survey

Share

The Hawthorne City Council has decided against requesting a county study to replace the city Fire Department with county fire services.

The survey on annexing the city to the Los Angeles Consolidated Fire Protection District was called for by residents unhappy with the efficiency of the city Fire Department.

“I keep seeing the same four or five people (speaking) for the survey,” while many more opponents have been represented at recent council meetings, said Mayor Pro Tem Chuck Bookhammer.

The vote came early Thursday morning at the end of a long council session. It included a long recess during which the council met as the Community Redevelopment Agency.

Bookhammer voted against the study, which would have cost about $3,000, along with Mayor Betty Ainsworth and Councilman David York.

Council members Ginny Lambert and Steve Anderson dissented.
