Director Arthur Penn, attending Cuba’s ninth Latin American Film Festival, said Saturday that he hopes market factors would soon allow more Latin films to be shown in the United States. Penn, with 13 feature films to his credit in a 30-year career, admitted little knowledge about Latin American cinema. But he predicted a great future for it, noting that the strongest works in fiction are coming from the region, with such renowned novelists as Colombian Nobel Prize winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Peru’s Mario Vargas Llosa and Mexico’s Carlos Fuentes. The Havana festival, a two-week movie fest featuring 400 films, began on Dec. 3.
