New York’s Cardinal John J. O’Connor said that he would not allow instruction about condoms in AIDS education programs in schools, hospitals and youth programs of his archdiocese despite backing of such programs by fellow clerics. In Boston, 16 New England bishops also issued a statement challenging the 30-page policy paper issued last week by the administrative board of the United States Catholic Conference supporting the idea of providing information about condoms to help curb the spread of AIDS. The statement by the New England bishops said: “We wish to emphasize that abstinence is the only morally acceptable way to avoid the sexual transmission of AIDS.”
