New York’s arts community capped a unique six-month anti-AIDS fund-raising drive Monday night with a glittery, star-studded $400,000 Christie’s auction of 30 works by some of the nation’s top living artists, including Mark di Suvero, John Chamberlain and Claes Oldenburg. The Art Against AIDS drive and auction benefited Elizabeth Taylor’s American Foundation for AIDS Research. Organizers say the drive--which included sales of works by 600 artists at 75 New York galleries since June, and raised more than $2.5 million for AIDS research--may be extended to Los Angeles and other major art centers.
