Local News in Brief : Hyperion Vote Delayed

The El Segundo City Council on Tuesday postponed a vote on whether to allow the City of Los Angeles to begin expanding a section of the Hyperion Sewage Treatment Plant that comes under the council’s jurisdiction.
The delay came at the request of Mayor Jack Fiadek, who asked for more time to study the proposal.
Last month, the council turned down the request after El Segundo residents complained of foul odors coming from the plant.
Los Angeles officials, who have pledged to control the smell, need the council’s approval because 6% of a new sedimentation tank planned for the Hyperion plant will be built in El Segundo. The project will increase the plant’s primary treatment capacity by about 25%. The Hyperion plant treats about 400 million gallons of sewage a day.
