Local News in Brief : Tuttle Won’t Run Again
Long Beach City Councilman Edd Tuttle has announced he will not seek reelection next year following an attempt by his ex-wife to garnish his city salary for non-payment of back child support.
Mayor Ernie Kell said Tuttle, a nine-year councilman, told him Monday that he wants to leave the 8th District seat to spend more time with his family. Tuttle could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
Tuttle’s action came after his ex-wife, Jan Herman of Long Beach, won a garnishment order to pay back about $1,466 in child support for their two sons, ages 10 and 13. Herman said Tuttle has since repaid all the money in a lump sum.
The councilman’s tenure has also been marked by a 1985 council censure when he was arrested for drunkenness after shouting racial slurs to a group of teen-agers aboard a bus. Last July, Tuttle became embroiled in a controversy concerning whether he accepted a free pass for a demonstration ride from a helicopter company seeking a city license.
