Local News in Brief : Bail Motion for Buckey

Share

The attorney for the chief defendant in the McMartin Pre-School molestation trial Tuesday again asked that bail be set for his client, who has been in jail for more than three years.

In making a renewed bail motion for Raymond Buckey, attorney Danny Davis provided the court with sworn affidavits from four former defendants in the case who maintain they never saw Buckey harm or threaten any children or animals at the nursery.

“Ray is a gentle and peaceful person who genuinely cared for both people and animals,” said former defendant Babette Spitler, who used to teach at the Manhattan Beach preschool. “He is not the type of person who would harm or threaten harm to either children or animals.”

Prosecutors have successfully argued in the past that Buckey, 29, should remain in custody without bail because he allegedly threatened harm to figures in the case. Buckey was initially held in lieu of $1-million bail following his arrest in early 1984. He has been held without bail since April, 1984.
