MANAGUA, Nicaragua —
President Daniel Ortega announced today that his government will observe a two-day Christmas truce on Dec. 24 and 25 and said his left-wing government will resume peace talks next week with U.S.-backed Contra rebels.
Ortega said that during the truce Nicaraguan troops will fight only if attacked or in order to defend civilians. He said the government is sending a delegation to the Dominican Republic on Monday for a second round of talks with the Contras to arrange a cease-fire in the 5-year-old war.
