Lawyers for the families of 22 crew members killed in the capsizing of the Herald of Free Enterprise ferry negotiated settlements ranging from $90,000 to $270,000. Britain’s High Court approved the awards totaling more than $3 million from the ferry’s insurers. An attorney for the families of passengers who died in the accident, which claimed almost 200 lives, said the same formula will be used for those claimants. An inquiry found that a bow door had been left open after the British ferry left the Belgian port of Zeebrugge in March.
