Habitual violators of parking laws, beware.

Motorists who have failed to pay five or more parking tickets will risk having their car towed away by city police starting Jan. 8.

The city said it would mail out written notices this month urging violators to take care of their outstanding tickets before the Jan. 8 deadline.

About 10,000 vehicles with a minimum of five outstanding parking citations, totaling 114,000 unpaid tickets, were on record in Santa Monica last month. The amount owed the city comes to $3.1 million, city spokesmen said.
