S. M. Mountains : Park Service to Buy Land
The National Park Service will acquire 52 parcels of parkland totaling about 2,000 acres in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. The land will be acquired with $9.5 million in funds appropriated by Congress for land acquisition in the area. The service has purchased 21 parcels, totaling 921 acres, in the area since April.
The federally owned land will be in addition to the approximately 40,000 acres of public parkland managed by state and local agencies within the 150,000 acre boundary of the recreation area.
The parcels include land in Zuma and Trancas canyons, along the Backbone Trail Corridor, in Arroyo Sequit, in Corral Canyon, and in Hernandez Bowl in Topanga.
