The State : Students Ring Up $10,000
About 40 dormitory students at Kings River Community College in Reedley, including members of the football team, rang up nearly $10,000 worth of illegal telephone calls on a stolen credit card number, college officials said. Dean Dick Geise said the school took no action against the football players or other students involved in the incident because “they violated none of our rules or regulations.” Louis Calhoun, security chief for the ATC Long Distance Phone Co., said about half of the 40 students had begun making repayment of the toll charges. Calhoun said calls were made throughout the United States and to Spain and Denmark. He said about 10% of the students had failed to come forward and could face prosecution under state and federal phone fraud statutes if they take no action by Feb. 1. He said the students could face up to 20 years in prison and/or fines reaching $50,000.
