Pop Music Reviews : Pointers in Giddy, Goofy, Glow-in-the-Dark Form

The Pointer Sisters, the wild women of R&B;/pop, have become known in recent years for sporting hair styles and stage wear that fall somewhere between Patti LaBelle and P. T. Barnum. But at the Universal Amphitheatre on Thursday night, the trio was the picture of conventional sex appeal in figure-hugging, jewel-bright dresses-- initially , anyway.

Later on in the evening, though, the girls happily regressed to their usual giddy, goofy form and strutted out in glow-in-the-dark space suits that had huge, Hula-Hoop-like rings circling their wrists, waists and thighs. “Hey,” shouted Anita Pointer, “don’t we look like the Jetsons?”

Musically, the Pointers unleashed their raucous performing style and shook things up as only this trio of sassy siblings can. Ignoring some of the staples in their repertoire (“He’s So Shy,” “Slow Hand”) in favor of less frequently performed material (“Hot Together,” “I Need You”), the Pointer Sisters managed to deliver a well-paced set that never lagged or lacked freshness.

The Pointers engagement concludes Sunday.
