Surgeons transplanted a donor heart into a man who had been kept alive for 15 days by an artificial heart at Humana Hospital in Louisville, Ky. Doctors said that, although the surgery on Walton Jones Jr., 60, went well, they were concerned about continued bleeding and that Jones was in critical condition. Jones, a retired photographer from Louisville, received a Jarvik J-7-70 artificial heart as a bridge to keep him alive for a transplant after bypass surgery failed. Dr. William DeVries, who implanted the pump, said Jones would have died without it. Jones had suffered two severe heart attacks in the last three years.
