The first Olympic tennis tournament in 64 years, to be staged at Seoul next summer, will serve as a means to develop tennis all over the world, Philippe Chatrier, president of the International Tennis Federation, said in Goteborg, Sweden.

Chatrier attended Sweden’s 5-0 defeat of India in the Davis Cup final over the weekend, as did International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch.

“The Olympic tennis tournament will develop tennis all over the world. Some 90% of the world’s countries will get help to build up tennis courts and educate coaches if the sport is on the Olympic program,” said Chatrier, who presented Sweden with its fourth Davis Cup trophy.

“A lot of tennis players in Asia, Africa, the Soviet Union and other areas of the world depend heavily on help from the government,” Chatrier said. “That’s why we have worked hard to include tennis in the Olympics.”
